You cannot judge a book by its cover in the same way you cannot judge a movie by its poster. While looking at the “Drive” movie poster I was reticent about this movie. But I stand corrected. This movie deserves the title of “masterpiece”, especially after so many great directors and actors delighted us with their movies in the 21st century.
The main character, who doesn’t have a name, simply being called “the driver” or “the kid” is one of a kind. Frankly it reminds me of the servant from “The Misunderstanding” (written by Albert Camus). He doesn’t react, he is blank emotion-wise, he is the real hero, without superpowers or expensive gadgets. A normal person. Even his car is a Chevy Impala, one of the most common of the american cars.
The beginning of the movie is a statement for the viewer that initiates him in the unpredictable plot to come.
What better way to introduce a main character, who is a driver, than through a heist? So we have an idea about his nightlife. The next scene is with the driver dressed as a police officer. You are not finished adjusting to this change, thinking already that he is a vigilante cop, and you find out that he is part time stunt driver and part time mechanic.
He falls in love with his beautiful neighbor, Irene and all is good until her husband comes home from prison. Against all odds “the driver” befriends Irene’s husband, Standard, and even tries to help him pay out a debt he gained in prison. Then the plot thickens as Standard gets killed in an unexpected shootout and his family is threatened by gangsters. And so “the driver” gets caught up right in the middle of it.
The entire action of the movie is a razzmatazz. I ended up waiting for the closing credits because I was sure that something else will happen.
From living a secluded live our hero ends up dealing with gangsters who don’t want just money, “the driver” becomes one of those characters to whom the upcoming cinematography will refer to. Also the way he is depicted throughout the plot makes reference to some mysterious, hardcore past he had before the happenings in the movie.
The director managed to balance the comic and the tragic creating a atemporal movie with the help of good acting and a good soundtrack (‘80s music) .
The action keeps pulling you to the edge, the plot thickens one minute after another , this is definitely a great movie to watch.

"Driver: If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours no matter what. I don't sit in while you're running it down; I don't carry a gun ... I drive. "

We were waiting for you...
